Because of that, our chefs will always have certain demands about which kind of potato we should be sourcing for each kind of dish and menu. You always need the best tools for each job, and the potato just happens to be one of our most vital tools for the catering trade.
Controlling your supply of potatoes so that you are only bringing in quality can be a tough task for a roast caterer like Hog Roast Headingley, but it is one that is vital to our processes. Thankfully, there are businesses out there like Whole Crop Marketing, who we had the pleasure of working with recently during their Spud Trials for 2024. Whole Crop Marketing help teams like us connect with local farms, potato suppliers, machine farming teams and the like so that the “Whole Crop” can be wholly and effectively marketed to make sure every last spud finds a home.
As part of their important marketing, the Whole Crop team will put on special Spud Trial events for farming teams and others in the industry to exhibit their work. This can mean growers showing off their crop, or exhibitors with equipment to present and sell. The Hog Roast Headingley team were invited along to this year’s trial, though not as an exhibitor, however, but rather as the catering specialist for the entire open day. Where there are potatoes there should be roasts, after all, so it was an obvious combination to bring Hog Roast Headingley and Whole Crop Marketing together for the day.
While we were there on duty as a caterer providing dining for the guests and exhibitors, it was also hugely informative for our Hog Roast Headingley team to see what is out there in the potato industry. Several of the exhibits we saw could well play a huge role in our own business in years to come, so it was excellent to be there and fuelling that with our own roasts today!
