There’s a certain kind of birthday that deserves more than a bog standard buffet and paper plates. And when you’re hitting the big five-oh with 40 of your nearest and dearest, the catering needs to match the occasion – not become another thing on your to-do list.
Jonathan had the right idea. Rather than spending his birthday elbow-deep in pots and pans, frantically checking oven temperatures and praying nothing burned while guests arrived, he handed the whole thing over to us. Smart man. Hog Roast Leeds rolled up to his home well before the 7pm serve time – and from that moment on, the evening was entirely his to enjoy.
And what an evening it turned out to be.
We’re not ones to cut corners, so when Jonathan requested the full hog roast experience, we went all in. The centrepiece was a whole free-range pig sourced from a local award-winning farm – because the quality of what goes on the spit matters enormously to what ends up on the plate. After hours of slow cooking, the result was exactly what you’d hope for: skin that had turned that deep, crackling gold (you know the colour – you could hear it crunch from across the garden), and meat underneath that was tender, juicy and falling apart in the best possible way.
Loaded into soft buns with sage and onion stuffing and a good spoonful of applesauce, it was the kind of food that has you dreaming of seconds before you’ve even finished firsts. And the sides – tomato and mozzarella salad, mixed salad, coleslaw and a mix of sweet potato and classic fries – gave guests plenty of reasons to go back for more.
Nobody was left out either. The veggie and vegan guests got stuck into grilled vegetable kebabs bursting with colour, served with optional halloumi, tzatziki and flatbreads. Honestly? Hog Roast Leeds spotted more than a few meat-eaters eyeing those up too.
As the night rolled on, guests were still grazing, still chatting, still grinning – all while Jonathan’s brass band kept the energy buzzing in the background. It was loud, warm and brilliantly chaotic in the way only a great birthday party can be.
Happy 50th, Jonathan. You celebrated it properly.
