Littleborough is situated at the foothills of the South Pennines and as with many other towns in the area, it became a mill town during the Industrial Revolution. Due to the area’s abundance of natural resources, the coal mining, engineering and textiles industries flourished during this period. Today, Littleborough’s town centre is now classed as a conservation area because of its distinctive architecture. Just outside of the town is Hollingworth Lake, a 130 acre reservoir which has had a rowing club in existence since 1872, as well as being a popular place for taking sailing lessons and participating in various water sports.
